Welcome to Prague

Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic with approximately 1.2 million inhabitants. Situated on the Vltava river in central Bohemia, it is an important political, social, cultural and economic centre in Central and Eastern Europe.

Nicknames for Prague have included "city of a hundred spires" and "the golden city". Since 1992, the historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. According to Guinness World Records, Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle in the world.

Public Transport

Public transport infrastructure consists of an integrated transport system of three metro lines, trams and buses.

The Prague Metro comprises three lines, each of which is represented by its own colour on the maps and signs: Line A (green), Line B (yellow) and Line C (red). The metro service operates between 5:00 in the morning and midnight every day, with about two- to three-minute intervals between trains during rush hours. Over 620 million passengers use the Prague Metro every year.

Taxis

If you require taxi services we recommend to always call a taxi and not get into a taxi on the streets. Amongst others, the companies listed below speak English and will safely take you to your destination. If you would like to pay in Euro, please inform the company when you order the taxi.

Time

The local time in Prague (CET) is one hour ahead of GMT and six hours ahead of US Eastern Standard Time.

Currency

The currency of the Czech Republic is the Czech Koruna (CZK). The exchange rate is 1 EUR = 25.6 CZK / 1 CZK = 0.039 EUR as of 13 February 2008.
